On January 1, 2025, a tragic mass crime took place in Cetinje, where more than 12 people lost their lives. The perpetrator of this horrific act took their own life afterward. The New Year in Montenegro started on a devastating note, days of mourning followed, and the national flag was lowered to half-mast.
But here`s the thing: Things are changing, and people are becoming more aware of what`s happening in our society. We know who to hold accountable, and we`re starting to call out the institutions (and the people running them) that aren`t doing their jobs properly. The good news? Protests are on the rise, and young people, the future of this country, are leading the charge.
Speaking of protests, one happened just this morning! The informal student group „Kamo Śutra?” organized a performance in front of the Government building at 11:45 AM. These students have been actively protesting since the tragic events of January 1st, demanding real change.
Their main demands? The resignation of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Danilo Šaranović, and the Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Defence, Aleksa Bečić. But they`re not stopping there, they`re also pushing for stricter regulations on gun ownership, reforms in the police system, the reintroduction of civic education as a mandatory subject in schools, and better institutional support for mental health,
And they`re not slowing down! “Kamo Śutra?” has called for another protest this Saturday. According to their post on X, people will gather in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at 07:30 PM, followed by a march to the Government building.
The students and protestants may not have a seat at the table, but we have something just as powerful a voice, and when we speak together, the world listens. Protests, activism, and relentless pressure on those in power force them to acknowledge our demands. Social media amplifies our message beyond borders, and history has proven that real change comes form the streets, not just from political offices. We must stay informed, challenge corruption, demand accountability, and never let fear silence us. Governments may try to ignore us, but when a movement is loud enough, determined enough, and refuses to back down, they have no choice but to listen.
Montenegro`s youth are making their voices heard, and it looks like this movement is just getting started!
