Romania slashes illegal migration by almost 80% – an unprecedented performance across the European Union

Minister of the Interior Cătălin Predoiu announced on Monday that illegal migration has plummeted by nearly 80% in the past two years – a result he described as unparalleled across Europe. Speaking at the inauguration of the new precinct for the Popești-Leordeni Town, he recalled that upon assuming office he instructed the Romanian Police to reinvigorate their efforts against drug trafficking – a goal that the recent figures confirm was met.

He also emphasized the intensified fight against organized crime and human trafficking, noting that the statistics validate these achievements as outcomes of deliberate, well-planned work.

Predoiu acknowledged, however that there is still room for improvement in certain branches of the ministry, the police force, and in addressing various criminal issues within Romania. He mentioned that last year`s investment budget for the ministry increased by roughly 150% compared to 2023, which supported the rapid implementation of programs to upgrade logistical equipment – from specialized vehicles to forensic laboratories – and enhance the real estate infrastructure.

The event was also attended by Romanian Police Inspector Benone-Marian Matei, the Gendarmery Inspector Alin-Ionel Mastan, and Alanna Simpson, a representative from the World Bank.
