Željko Komšić about Milorad Dodik

Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić, stated today that he believes Milorad Dodik has activated a plan he had prepared earlier, but that the plan is not yielding the results he expected.

Speaking to journalists in Sarajevo after the opening of a conference organized by the Institute of European Democrats (IED) on the future of the Western Balkans and its relations with the EU, Komšić emphasized that it remains to be seen whether Dragan Čović and HDZ BiH, as well as Zagreb, have decided to break their strategic partnership with Dodik and SNSD, as he put it.

Dragan Čović always gives his statements in half-sentences and half-thoughts, but it can be concluded from them that he shows readiness to change the current majority, meaning that Dodik and everything he is doing are heading towards a deeper and further isolation, in relation to the entire situation he has actually produced, said Komšić.

He adds that Dodik has clearly activated a plan he had prepared earlier, but that this plan is not giving him the results he expected.

This is my opinion. There is significant resistance even within RS itself. It’s political madness that he is launching, hoping he will escape the situation he was not pushed into by anyone, but one he brought upon himself. Although it may sometimes feel frustrating that our law enforcement institutions cannot reach him, it seems to me that, in the long run, Dodik is a done deal. This is what it seems to me, and we’ll see how things develop further, said Komšić.

He emphasizes the need to be wise, smart, and not pour gasoline on the fire.

This is, after all, a longer fight, and it would be counterproductive for us, on our side, to bring about a situation where people in Republika Srpska rally around Dodik and support his politics. This is not about Republika Srpska. This is not about the Serb people. This is only about the political fate of one person, one political option. And as soon as people in Republika Srpska realize that, I think we all have a chance to come out of this truly difficult crisis in a normal way. And after that, we can even start building the country as it should really be, Komšić said.

He also highlighted the importance of the work of Bosnian and Herzegovinian institutions. He reminded that Dodik himself has been convicted in a non-final ruling, and that if he believes he is right, he has the option to continue the fight within legal frameworks.
