The President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, has appealed for the respect of international law and human rights in the case of Ratko Mladić, the convicted war criminal, pointing out his poor health and inhumane treatment in the detention hospital in The Hague.
“I appeal for the respect of international law, but above all, I appeal for humanity and ethics to ensure that Mladić is given appropriate treatment,” Dodik stated through the social media platform X.
His son, Darko Mladić, said that the health condition of his father, who has been placed in the detention hospital in The Hague since April of last year, is significantly worsening. According to him, Mladić has neurological, cardiovascular, and urological problems that are complicating and deteriorating.
In January of last year, Mladić underwent surgery in a Dutch hospital where a pacemaker was implanted, and since then, his kidneys have also failed. His family and defense attorneys have repeatedly requested that he be allowed to receive treatment outside of detention, but those requests have been denied.
Ratko Mladić, former commander of the General Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska, was sentenced in June 2021 to life imprisonment for war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the genocide in Srebrenica, the siege of Sarajevo, ethnic cleansing, torture, rape, and other crimes against humanity during the Bosnian War.
