Turkey has sent a protest note to Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding a play at the National Theatre Sarajevo

The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey has officially responded with a note addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressing “the most urgent” concern regarding the scheduled performance of the play “Six Against Turkey.” The play is planned for April 14, 2025, as part of the “Regional Theatre” festival at the National Theatre Sarajevo.

In the note, the Embassy “strongly opposes” the performance, claiming that it contains “propaganda in support of the FETO terrorist organization against Turkey and its head of state.”

Particular attention was drawn to photos from the official page of the National Theatre Sarajevo, showing masks with the likenesses of the Turkish president and Fethullah Gülen, the leader of FETO. The Embassy interprets these photos as a “clear sign of the play’s connection to FETO.”

“The Embassy wishes to emphasize that, in light of the good relations between the two countries, such propaganda is considered unacceptable,” states the official document.

The Embassy has requested that the Ministry forward this concern to the relevant institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The play “Six Against Turkey” is the result of collaboration between the theatre collectives Qendra Multimedia (Kosovo), Gerçek Tiyatrosu (Turkey), and My Balkans (USA/Serbia). The producers state that the play thematically addresses “the degradation of democracy and the rise of populist-nationalist regimes and authoritarianism in Europe.”

The play is performed in Albanian, English, and Turkish, and was created by an international team of theatre artists from Kosovo, Turkey, and other European countries.
