Montenegro remains a credible and committed NATO member, actively contributing to the Alliance`s missions, policies, and shared values of peace, dialogue, and cooperation that`s the message President Jakov Milatović shared today during his meeting with NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Šekerinska in Podgorica.
According to the President’s office, Milatović highlighted that Montenegro is currently undergoing its most significant military modernization since regaining independence. In 2024, over 30% of the defense budget is allocated to modernization efforts, with total defense spendings exceeding 2% of the national budget aligning with NATO`s strategic goals.
He emphasized the importance of continued high-level NATO visits and stronger political dialogue for regional stability. Milatović welcomed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte`s recent visit to the Western Balkans and expressed hope that Montenegro will be among his next stops. He also praised Šekerinska’s appointment as a signal of NATO`s dedication to the region`s role in Europe`s overall security.
The President reaffirmed Montenegro`s firm support for a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine and acknowledged the importance of NATO`s defensive posture, especially on the Eastern flank.
He noted Montenegro`s active contribution to NATO battle groups in Latvia, Bulgaria, and Romania, further demonstrating the country`s commitment.
The meeting came just ahead of NATO Youth Summit in Budva the first of its kind to be held in Montenegro, an initiative spearheaded by Milatović. Šekerinska praised Montenegro`s role in the region and highlighted the significance of hosting the summit, which gathers over 400 participants from NATO member and partner countries to engage youth in shaping the future of the Alliance.
Montenegro`s active role in NATO shows that small countries can make a real impact on international security. The ongoing modernization of its military and involvement in collective defense missions show serious dedication. Hosting the Youth Summit is also a smart move, it`s a chance to inspire the next generation and make NATO more relatable and visible to youth people. Plus, it places Montenegro on the map as not just a participant, bur a contributor to global security conversations. A strong message of readiness and relevance.
