Today in Podgorica, the Minister of Public Administration, Maraš Dukaj, met with NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ramila Šekerinska. Together, they visited the Regional Centre for Cyber Capacity Building for the Western Balkans (WB3C) and Montenegro`s Government Security Operations Centre (GSOC).
Minister Dukaj highlighted that the establishment of the WB3C has positioned Montenegro as a regional hub for sharing expertise and gaining new knowledge in the field of cybersecurity. He emphasized that the cyber attack in August 2022 served as a key turning point, showing just how important NATO membership is. Immediate support from allies helped Montenegro respond swiftly, and since then, the country has focused on implementing major strategic reforms. According to Dukaj, in less than three years of dedicated work with partners and allies, Montenegro has achieved significant progress in strengthening its cyber defence systems.
He noted the importance of WB3C not just for national, but also for regional cyber resilience, and underlined that hosting the center in Podgorica is a strong reflection of Montenegro`s commitment to both NATO and EU integration efforts. He added that Montenegro is ready to meet the obligations and standards required for full EU membership and its determined to contribute actively to collective security efforts.
Deputy Secretary General Šekerinska commended the country`s efforts, praising the rapid growth and strengthening of its cyber capabilities.
It`s encouraging to see Montenegro take such a proactive and strategic approach to cybersecurity. By investing in regional cooperation and modern infrastructure, the country is not only protecting itself but also contributing to the stability of the wider Western Balkans region. Hosting a center like the WB3C in Podgorica is a strong statement it shows that Montenegro is serious about its role in both NATO and future EU membership. In a time when cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, this kind of initiative is essential. It`s a smart move that will likely strengthen Montenegro`s international partnerships and reputation in the long run.
