Coalition ‘Velika Plaža or Velika Laža’ Calls for Protest Camp at Velika Plaža

A coalition called “Velika plaža ili Velika laža” will organize a two-day public camp on May 2nd and 3rd at Velika Plaža, a key natural area in Ulcinj. The camp, under the slogan “Freedom for the Beach,” aims to raise awareness about the threats to Velika Plaža, which is one of the last naturally preserved areas on the Adriatic coast. The coalition’s message is clear: Velika Plaža must remain free and accessible for people, nature, and future generations.

The event will take place at the “Laguna” kiteboarding center and welcomes everyone from children and families to activists, artists, and sports enthusiasts. The program includes workshops, exhibitions, talks, art installations, and activities for children, all aimed at celebrating and protecting the beach. Attendees are encouraged to bring tents, reusable water bottles, sunscreen, and an open mind. The camp promotes a sense of community, respect for nature, and a commitment to preserving the environment free from waste, noise, and concrete development.

The coalition emphasizes that Velika Plaža is not just a tourist destination but a vital ecosystem, home to rare species and a symbol of the natural heritage of Montenegro. The call is for immediate action to defend this natural treasure, urging people to join the fight to protect the freedom of the beach and the broader environment.

What stands out to me is how this initiative brings together people from all walks of life scientists, artists, families, and activists all united for a common cause: preserving the natural beauty and ecological significance of Velika Plaža. In a time when environmental conservation often faces the pressure of urban development and privatization, it’s inspiring to see communities mobilizing to protect what remains of our natural spaces.

The event highlights an important message that not all spaces are meant to be commercialized or transformed for profit. Some places, like Velika Plaža, hold value far beyond their tourist potential they are living ecosystems, cultural landmarks, and shared spaces that need to be protected for future generations.

That resonates deeply is the focus on sustainable and respectful use of natural resources, with an emphasis on reducing waste and avoiding the degradation of the environment.

This campaign isn’t just about protecting a beach; it’s about fighting for the broader cause of ecological sustainability and the preservation of places that form the heart of our collective identity.

I believe this type of grassroots movement is crucial for tackling the complex environmental challenges we face today. It’s a reminder that each of us has a role in defending the spaces that are essential not only for biodiversity but also for the cultural and social health of our communities.
