The commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide will be organized with a series of activities both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world. The President of the Organizing Committee, Hamdija Fejzić, stated that preparations are proceeding according to plan and that the final program of the commemoration will be adopted in mid-May.
“On May 15, we have a scheduled meeting of the Organizing Committee, during which we will adopt the final program for commemorating the 30th anniversary of the genocide. Although we have a lot of work ahead of us, we will strive to mark this anniversary in the best possible way, exactly as the victims deserve—with dignity,” said Fejzić.
Fejzić emphasized that the commemoration of this important anniversary has received broader international support, thanks in part to the United Nations Resolution adopted last year.
“The United Nations adopted a Resolution on the genocide last year, and we, as the Organizing Committee, have a responsibility to coordinate the commemoration of the anniversary both in Europe and around the world. This year, a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović, has also joined the efforts. We have formed a coordination body that mainly serves to support the Organizing Committee in more effectively meeting the tasks ahead of us,” explained Fejzić.
Alongside this, intensive preparations are underway for the traditional “Peace March,” which pays tribute to the victims of the genocide.
The President of the “Peace March 2025” Subcommittee, Suljo Čakanović, stated that the preparation of the route is nearing completion and that a final inspection of the terrain is scheduled for the end of June.
“This is a preliminary inspection, and the final walkthrough will take place at the end of June. I want to commend all participants for their continued support of this event—over the years they have always fulfilled their responsibilities, and there’s no doubt that will be the case again this year. A meeting was held in the Municipality of Sapna between the Peace March subcommittee and the logistics subcommittee, along with all parties involved in organizing the march, to inspect and plan the layout of the participant overnight camps,” said Čakanović.
To date, 6,765 victims of the genocide have been buried at the Memorial Center in Potočari, while 250 victims have been buried in local cemeteries, in accordance with the wishes of their families.
The UN General Assembly has declared July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, further underscoring the importance of a dignified and comprehensive commemoration of this tragic anniversary.
