Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović stated during the European Political Community Summit in Tirana that Montenegro and Croatia should address their outstanding issues in an open and constructive atmosphere. In response to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković’s remarks that Montenegro’s EU progress depends on resolving bilateral matters with Croatia, Milatović emphasized their good personal relationship and mutual respect.
He noted that bilateral talks between the two countries’ foreign ministries are ongoing and that Croatia remains a strong supporter of Montenegro’s EU path. He expressed confidence that both governments will make visible progress in addressing these issues.
Speaking at the Summit, Milatović also highlighted the importance of European unity amid ongoing geopolitical challenges like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and policy differences between the EU and the U.S. He emphasized that the EU must play a more significant role in promoting a rules-based international order.
Milatović used the opportunity to showcase Montenegro’s reform efforts and reiterated his ambitious, yet achievable, goal for Montenegro to become the EU’s 28th member by 2028. He also expressed Montenegro’s interest in potentially hosting the European Political Community Summit in 2026, although no decision has been made yet.
