Germany strengthens its role in BiH? – Schmidt and Merz send a message after the meeting

The High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, held a constructive informal meeting with Friedrich Merz, the designated federal chancellor of Germany.

The discussion focused on the current political and security situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as broader developments in the Western Balkans region, according to a post by the OHR on the social network X.

The interlocutors share a long-standing common view that transatlantic relations and European integration remain of great importance.

The High Representative pointed out the recent challenges regarding the stability and functionality of state institutions coming from the ruling coalition in Republika Srpska, and once again confirmed the importance of respecting the Dayton Peace Agreement and preserving the integrity of state institutions.

The High Representative emphasized the need for continuous international engagement in support of reforms and democratic consolidation.

“Although the meeting was more focused on future cooperation and of an informal nature, it can be expected that the new German government under Merz’s leadership will closely collaborate with the broader international community, including the Office of the High Representative, with the aim of ensuring peace, stability, and progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Schmidt said.
