The Head of the European Union Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luigi Soreca, congratulated Europe Day, recalling the importance and symbolism of the Sarajevo Eternal Flame in the context of Europe’s liberation from fascism.
“The Sarajevo Eternal Flame symbolizes the sacrifices made in the liberation of Europe from fascism. I often pass by it on my way to the Europe House, located just behind this monument. Every time I pass by, I am reminded that the European Union is not just a mere system of institutions and regulations. Above all, it is an idea—an answer to the horrors of fascism and war through unity, cooperation, and peace, as articulated by Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950,” said Soreca.
He emphasized that this is the vision we celebrate on Europe Day. At the heart of that vision are the people—improving their lives through greater security and protection, and more opportunities for them and their families.
“Europe Day acknowledges our progress, but it also calls on us to complete the founders’ project of Europe through its enlargement. Bosnia and Herzegovina is undeniably European—not only geographically at the heart of Europe but also culturally and historically. However, today the European path is blocked as a result of a deep political and constitutional crisis. The European path remains the most effective framework for ensuring stability, prosperity, and reconciliation. It is also the best starting point for addressing complex, sensitive, and long-standing issues. Many in Bosnia and Herzegovina are already taking advantage of the opportunities offered by various EU projects and programs,” he added.
He emphasized that political actors can increase these opportunities by advancing on the European path.
“The vision of a united Europe is precious and more needed than ever. Let us continue to work together to make it a reality! Happy Europe Day,” Soreca concluded.
