At least seven Palestinian children have died form the cold in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19. Earlier, UNRWA Secretary-General Philippe Lazzarini highlighted the dire situation in the enclave due to the cold and dwindling humanitarian supplies.
The Norwegian Refugee Council stated that nearly one million Palestinians in Gaza lack adequate protection against the winter cold. According to the NRC, by the end of November, only 285 000 displaced people in Gaza had received basic shelter materials, while around 945 000 still require assistance.
Humanitarian aid deliveries resumed after Qatar`s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced on January 15 that Doha, Cairo and Washington had mediated an agreement between Israel and Hamas for the release of hostages held in Gaza and the declaration of a ceasefire in the enclave.
